Byzantine Iconography is one of the most distinguished forms of art. It flourished during the golden years of the Byzantine Empire, drawing influences from the ancient Greek painting of the palaces, as well as from Egypt and the coastal regions of the Mediterranean. It is an art form that is deeply symbolic, not only in what is depicted, but also in the very manner of painting. The stylized approach to the depiction of Saints aims to emphasize the spirit rather than the realism of matter.
The color palette is earthy, using pigments derived from soil, metals, and minerals. This is partly because the appropriate technology did not exist at the time, but also because the intention was to convey a sense of humility. The colors chosen for the garments of the Saints, as well as for the background, are far from random and carry their own symbolism.
There are various schools within Byzantine Art. The most prominent are the Cretan School, with its monastic approach, where the range of colors is quite limited and the modeling of color is restrained, placing emphasis on austerity and simplicity, and the Macedonian School, which is clearly richer in its use of color and greater detail in modeling, showing a visible influence from the Russian approach to icon painting.
There is also a school that combines elements of the previous two and carries a more distinctly Greek folkloric character, with a palette influenced by the so-called Greek light. This is the school of the icon painter Kontoglou, who established it around 1950. This is also the school our company has chosen to follow in the creation of its icons, using Byzantine colors enriched by the magic of the unique Greek light.
Our themes are drawn not only from Orthodox teaching, but from the whole Christian tradition, with the aim of extending the uniqueness of Byzantine Art to the entire Christian world. The colors are handmade, as required by this ancient tradition, resulting in a truly unique final work.
